Fictional Worlds Theories. An Analysis and Interpretation of the Recent Development of the Theories of Fictional Worlds.

The thesis analyzes the possibilities of application of the fictional worlds theory as a possible basis for a different literary-theoretical approach to the study of literary texts. Not being a mere literature research, the thesis inquires into issues which are necessarily connected with the fictional worlds theory and which have been so far rarely dealt with, if discussed at all. It contributes to the discussion on advantages and drawbacks of the mimetic approach and of the fiction theory, it analyzes the possible applicability of the fictional worlds theory in literary history, it attempts to determine the correlation between the Seymour Chatman's textual types and the fiction theory nomenclature, and last but not least the thesis deals with the possibilities of this theory in the fictional worlds of lyrical poetry. Some Syntactic Phenomena Related to Computer-Aided Translation from German into Czech

The thesis looks at computer-aided translation (CAT), which, along with machine translation (MT), stands for the use of information technology in translation, but, unlike MT, is not of primary concern for Translation Studies research. Based on the current state of research, this thesis aims to address the syntax of CAT text output. The theoretical part first describes the working principles of CAT tools and presents them in the context of general translation studies, then defines information structure and endophoric reference as the syntactic phenomena to be analysed. Finally it provides a methodological model for the empirical part. Using a set of texts translated with CAT tools and a set of texts translated without them, the empirical part seeks to check whether translators using CAT tools tend to shift from the syntagmatic approach to text to a more paradigmatic one. To this end, an analysis is carried out to determine the interference rate in the information structure of the target texts as well as the rate of subjectively motivated shifts in distant endophoric reference. Contrastive analysis of a text-type: English and Czech restaurant menus.

This thesis carries out a contrastive analysis of English and Czech restaurant menus. A restaurant menu is a specific type of text that deserves a detailed examination. The theoretical background outlines the various uses of the concepts genre, text type, register and style. The further study of this specific text type is carried out on the basis of an existing theoretical material that focuses on texts of a similar nature. Ten samples of British and Irish menus, ten samples of Czech menus and six samples of English translations of Czech menus were collected for the purpose of the contrastive analysis. The analysis of these authentic menus provides a description of their arrangement and structure, as well as their typological classification among a specific text type category. English and Czech menus are described in terms of their contents and formal, lexical and grammatical features. A subsequent comparison of the characteristics of each sample reveals similarities and differences between them. The differences between the two samples are reflected in deficiencies of the English translations of Czech menus.
